The Monday Set: Acid House Kings – New York City – 7/8/06
Acid House Kings released a new single earlier this month and have a brand spanking new LP set to drop later this month. One of TSOI's writers (Avalanche) caught them on their last US tour nearly 5 years ago. Here's a recording of one of their two NYC dates back in 2006 (More...)
The Monday Set: Magic Bullets – Los Angeles – 2/19/11
On a last minute whim we decided to check out San Francisco's Magic Bullets' instore performance at Origami Vinyl a couple of weekends ago. I wasn't that familiar with the band and had only heard a few tracks streamed from MySpace, but since it was a free show we had nothing to lose (More...)
The Monday Set: Scissor Sisters – New York City – 8/25/10
Scissor Sisters recently returned from a minor hiatus with a new album call "Night Work". Apparently the album was created after the band scrapped 18 months of songwriting for the follow up to 2006's "Ta-Dah". I'm not sure what the album was originally supposed to sound like, but I have to say I'm pretty sure that the wait was worth it. (More...)
The Monday Set: Los Cincos – Los Angeles – 12/4/95
After the split of seminal hardcore band Honeywell, 2 members went on to form One Eyed Richard and The Goddamn Liars. After one 12" release, One Eyed Richard changed their name to the moniker Los Cincos and continued to put out releases for the next 5 years. This recording has a couple tracks from the early One Eyed Richard days (More...)
The Monday Set: Excuse 17 – Berkeley – 4/28/95
I finished Sara Marcus’s "Girls to the Front: The True Story Of The Riot Grrrl Revolution" this past weekend so I'm declaring it Riot Grrrl week here on TSOI. Quite often while reading the book I found myself thinking it was more like reading a diary than a documentation of the riot grrrl scene. (More...)
The Monday Set: Earwig – Bruxelles – 7-20-91
I had a request for this show a couple of months ago and I'm getting around to posting it. 2/3s of the band Earwig eventually became Insides who had a couple of fantastic releases on 4AD in the mid-90s (More...)
The Monday Set: KARP – Providence – 11/13/94
The "KARP Lives" documentary should be coming out sometime this year (I'm hoping), but in the meantime, here's a little live KARP to hold you over. They played in my basement in Minneapolis on this same tour and blew everyone away, obviously (More...)
The Monday Set: Unwound – Hartford – 4/7/95
The overall feeling I get from this Unwound recording is that it was a "paying your dues" type of show, opening for Fugazi. This short set was played to what sounds like a very unappreciative crowd who were more interested in Ian and co. bringing the rock than a more-mellow-than-average Unwound set. (More...)
The Monday Set: Generationals – Baton Rouge – 11/13/2010
New Orleans' own Generationals closed out a tour in support of their Trust EP at Chelsea's Cafe. Chelsea's has a warm spot in the hearts of those-in-the-know in Baton Rouge, and it is just starting to put on more indie shows again following a period of bizarre persecution by the state's Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control (More...)
The Monday Set: Slant 6 – Athens – 8/3/93
I got this and another amazing live Slant 6 recording from Henry Owings and his never ending box(es) of amazing recordings. I had what must have been a multi-generation cassette version of this soundboard recording that I had traded for in the '90s, but this one comes directly from the master (More...)
