This is a short set that was broadcast on Radio 1 of Stereolab’s Phoenix Festival performance. As far as I know, only these three tracks made it to the airwaves. ’96/’97 era-Stereolab live has always been my favorite so this was a great find in the old box of cassettes.

After a bit of EQ-ing, this average sounding audience early Stereolab recording turned out pretty good. They must have been trying out some of the songs that would eventually make their way on the “Mars Audiac Quintet” lp. No idea on how generated this cassette was, but seeing that it made it’s way from France all the way to my hands in Los Angeles, I’m assuming it’s 3rd or 4th.

I saw Stereolab for the first time on this tour in Minneapolis and it was by far the best Stereolab show I’ve ever seen. I could have been the bottle of Malibu Rum that I was drinking that night (which I have never touched since) but I remember the show they put on was amazing and the song selection was impeccable. One note on this recording, I have it down as a 1st generation copy from the master, if you’re into knowing that kind of stuff.
