The Postal Service
7th Street Entry
Minneapolis, MN

Here’s a great soundboard recording from the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis. It looks like skipping my only opportunity to see The Postal Service was a stupid move on my part. They were one of those bands that I figured I would just see later and 6 years hence, it sounds like they are kaput. Special thanks goes out to listentothebeat for sending this recording my way.

Since The New Standards cover college radio/indie-rock songs I can hope to assume that their name refers to the type of songs these guys play. The New Standards are composed of ex-members of different luminary Minneapolis bands, one of which being Trip Shakespeare, a band I am particularly fond. (That reminds me, I need to get me mitts on that first album…the one with ‘Toolmaster of Brainard’, like stat.) The New Standards played songs from the likes of Elvis Costello and The Replacements acoustically with stand-up base, vibraphone, and piano giving the renditions a decided cabaret bent. I suspect, since these guys are from Minneapolis and along with the cabaret vibe, I am willing to venture that the members of The New Standards hatched this idea while sitting around at downtown Minneapolis’s Nye’s Polonaise piano bar.
There’s not a lot I can say about The Postal Service which probably hasn’t been said better somewhere else. This song was recorded live at The Gypsy Tea Room in Dallas, TX in 2003. I still have yet to see The Postal Service live because I refuse to bow to the evil overlord, also known as Ticketmaster, and their shows always sell out before you can purchase tickets at the door. But I believe a day will come when Ticketmaster will bow to me and I will finally see them live!
