The Monday Set: Legendary Jim Ruiz Group – Minneapolis – 5/9/07

The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group
7th St. Entry
Minneapolis, MN
5/9/07

A little over three years ago, Jim Ruiz decided to a one off reunion show at the 7th Street Entry. I had missed his last performance which was in NYC at the Chickfactor showcase in 2002, so I was determined to make this one. He debuted a bunch of new songs which he said would be out hopefully by the end of 2007. Three years later, no new info on a record which is a shame since the “Unknown Tracks” included on this recording are pretty stellar.

Setlist:
1. Be My Valentine
2. Ariel
3. The Ballad of Truman Capote
4. Last Summer
5. Unknown Track
6. Minneapolis
7. Unknown Track
8. Unknown Track
9. Unknown Track
10. Urban Gentleman
11. Stormtrooper
12. Good Feeling (Violent Femmes Cover)

The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group – The Ruling Class (Monochrome Set Cover)

I realized that it’s been nearly a year since I posted a track from one of my favorite bands, The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group. I flew out to Minneapolis to see him play a little over a year ago now and at the show he debuted a bunch of new songs which he said would be out hopefully by the end of 2007. We’re now officially in the later half of 2008 and still no new record, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. This song was recorded a few years ago on 770 Radio K, the University of Minnesota’s AM station. It’s a Monochrome Set track that was one of my favorite covers I’ve ever heard Jim play.

Benito – Ferrol, Spain

It’s been about six months since I’ve posted a Jim Ruiz track which is probably a record. The most written about bands on this site must be Unwound, Jim Ruiz, and probably Blonde Redhead. Anyway, a while back someone contacted me to ask me if I had heard the Benito song on the Elefant Records compilation “Montecarlo.” He had a sneaking suspicion that it was a Jim Ruiz track in disguise. I did a little snooping on the internet and found out that it was in fact Jim and Stephanie under a different name. Not only was it a track on Elefant comp, but it also was the very first release from Minnesota’s Grimsey Records.

The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group – Unknown Track (Live)

I’m off to Minneapolis to see the first Legendary Jim Ruiz Group show in five years. I was close to flying out to New York City for his show in 2002, but decided to skip it at the last minute. I’m not going to make the same mistake twice! This song is from a show they played at the U of M in 1997, but I have no idea if this is an unknown LJRG track or a cover song that they played.

The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group – Minneapolis (Live)

I just realized that I haven’t posted a track from one of my favorite bands in over 6 months. This Legendary Jim Ruiz Group song was released on a compilation cd for a radio station. Unfortunately, I only got the one song as a .wav file so I don’t know which radio station it was that put the compilation out. This is a great version of “Minneapolis” where the band plays along to a drum machine. I’m not sure if any other songs exist from this session, but I keep hoping I’ll come across them if they do.

Jim Ruiz – Be My Valentine (Live)

There are too many valentine songs to choose from. Blonde Redhead, Christy Front Drive, Sisters of Mercy…plus there’s Unwound’s “Valentine Card” and every song by My Bloody Valentine would have worked, but I settled on one of my favorites, Jim Ruiz. This song was recorded at the Chickfactor Mixtape record release party in NYC back in 2002. Have a great Valentines Day.

Rena And Her Men – This Is Goodbye

After hearing this cover I was almost convinced to buy a Petual Clark record. Rena And Her Men was Jim Ruiz and John Crozier who were joined by Rena Erickson on vocals. Rena was tragically killed in 1990 and this song along with one other were released by Jim as a tribute to her. The two songs can be found on the Japanese release of The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group’s “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou” which I unfortunately don’t own, but I converted this track from my copy of the 7″.

The Shebrews – Strange Effect

The Shebrews are John Crozier and Stephanie Winter who both played with The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group. They are a fantastic retro-pop duo from Minneapolis who released a split 7″ and an EP in 2004. This is a great cover of The Kinks “This Strange Effect” from the EP.
