It was a really sad day when the Reid brothers decided to part ways. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to see Freeheat, but lately Jim Reid has been playing solo and he hasn’t come anywhere near the West Coast. This song was recorded a couple of days ago at the Night & Day Cafe in Manchester. Surprisingly, I can’t find any other tour dates for Jim on his MySpace page or on the Planting Seed website, so who knows, maybe he’ll be playing US shows sometime soon.

I like The Shins and I love The Jesus And Mary Chain, but I don’t know what to think about this cover. The Shins were playing this song live during their 2002 US tour. I’m not actually sure which city this song was recorded in, but the recording is certainly interesting. I don’t know if I can get behind The Shin’s twangy take on one of my favorite JAMC song.
Continuing with Oscar fever, I thought I would post a song about the difficulty of being a pimp that was actually good (that “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” was horrible). This song is off the 5 track sampler that was sent out in advance of the JAMC/Curve/Spiritualized “Rollercoaster” tour. There were two “Teenage Lust” remixes on the cd that I don’t believe were released anywhere else. I think the Three 6 Mafia could learn a few things from the Reid brothers.
I thought I had heard most of the Jesus And Mary Chain stuff out there. When I was in high school, my friend Walt was an obsessive JAMC fan and had everything by them. And when I say everything, I mean everything. I got copies of a lot of the rare stuff before he moved, but a couple of months ago I traded some recordings with a guy who had the complete 1984 demo which was recorded by Jim and William at their house. Some of these songs found their way on to Barbed Wire Kisses, but this recording of In A Hole was a great find.
In 1991 Terry Edwards released a very entertaining EP of instrumental versions of Jesus And Mary Chain songs from the Psychocandy era. Since recording that EP, the has recorded tributes to The Fall, The Cure, and Blur and he has played on recordings by The Creatures, Lush and Spiritualized. He eventually ended up playing trumpet on the Jesus and Mary Chain song “I Love Rock And Roll.”
