The Monday Set: Bauhaus – Wiesbaden – 11/28/81

Bauhaus
Wartburg Club
Weisbaden, Germany
11/28/81

For 30 plus (yeah 30!) years, Peter Murphy has been one of the most captivating front-men in show business. I recently took my wife to her first Peter Murphy concert and even though she knew next to nothing about his solo work short of “Marlene Dietrich’s Favorite Poem” she walked away even more captivated by the performance than I did, a fan of over 20 years.

Peter Murphy’s new record “Ninth” comes out today in the UK and tomorrow in the US. The full record can be streamed right now from the fantastic Slicing Up Eyeballs and I can say, it’s a pretty fantastic record.

Now a little bit about this recording. Recorded in Germany in 1981, Bauhaus were wrapping up their “Mask” European tour. It’s an audience recording from the early ’80s, so there’s a ton of tape hiss, but you can still hear the brilliant live show the band must have put on for what was a small crowd judging by the amount of applause.

1. Intro/The Passion Of Lovers
2. In The Flat Field
3. Silent Hedges
4. In Fear Of Fear

Bauhaus: Kick In The Eye
NY Dancestand
New York City, NY
3/12/81

This 1981 Bauhaus clip may have been their television debut. It’s truly unfortunate that the performance is mimed, but the band does a good job of still looking interested.

Here is a fantastic audience-sourced “Mask” era live recording. What’s notable about this show is the inclusion of tracks like “The Man With X-Ray Eyes” and “Of Lillies And Remains” which didn’t make it into their live performances very often past this tour.

The Monday Set: Bauhaus – Oxford, UK – 8/11/80

Bauhaus
Scamps Disco
Oxford, UK
8/11/80

This was one of the very first “bootleg” cassettes I ever owned. Way back in the day before the fancy interweb, you had to look through the back of magazines and request people’s lists via mail. I bought this cassette which also included their ’83 Glasgow set off someone’s list and listened to it obsessively for years. I finally got around to transferring it to CD.

Set List:
1 Double Dare
2 In The Flat Field
3 Boys
4 Telegram Sam
5 Dancing
6 Small Talk Stinks
7 Terror Couple Kill Colonel
8 Stigmata Martyr
9 St. Vitus Dance

Bauhaus – Poison Pen (Rejected Mix)

I just read that Bauhaus has a new record coming out next April, but that’s the last thing that they are going to do. No more touring, no more new songs, nothing else. I’m not really excited about the prospect of a new record, and I’m glad they are done with touring because whenever they go on a long string of dates, David J leaves town. When they aren’t on tour, he’s here in Southern California, playing live shows, doing DJ appearances, etc. I would much rather see him solo than Bauhaus any day. This song is off the rejected mix of “Mask” and never got a proper release on the final record. Too bad since it’s a great song.

Punto a Capo

5/4/82

I heard about this video about a year ago, but I could never get the guy who had it to trade with me. Finally I ended up getting a copy via a difference source. Unfortunately, whoever shot it used some really horrible 80’s era effects, so what could have been an amazing show ends up being a visual mess. On top of it all, the song is cut off. But it’s still an amazing piece of footage.

Bauhaus – Antonin Artaud (Live)

Here’s a live Bauhaus track from their show at the Marble Bar in Baltimore back in 1982. I finally got my copy of “Archive/Shadow of Light” on DVD and watched it for the first time in a looooong time. They put on a truly amazing show. It also has come to my attention that there’s another video out there of Bauhaus playing Hurrah in New York in 1980 or 1981. I’ve been keeping my eye out for it and hopefully it will see the light of day sometime in the near future.

Bauhaus – Poison Pen
Live In London

Looking back at my show-going career, one of the most disappointing shows I have ever been witness to was the first Bauhaus reunion tour. After watching “Archive” and “Live In London” over and over, the chemistry of the reunited band just wasn’t the same. I don’t think it’s due to the fact that they are older therefore they can no longer “bring the rock” because I saw David J play a bunch of solo shows a couple of years and he was fucking incredible. I haven’t bothered to see them on any of the subsequent tours for fear of being even more distraught. Anyway, this video is from the Bauhaus “Live In London” video that also includes a set by Chrome.

Bauhaus – Muscle In Plastic (Playground Studios Mix)

This track is from the version of Mask that was mixed at Playground Studios in July, 1981. Some of the songs were remixed and used on the final release, some of the songs were scrapped and re-recorded, and some of the songs were only released as B-Sides. This version of Muscle In Plastic seems to have been re-recorded for the official Mask release. The quality isn’t that great, but it’s interesting to hear a very different take on this great song.
